The “Lutherweg in Saxony” leads as a spiritual circular hiking route through the scenic region.

The effects and impulses of the Reformation are still visible and alive today. In 1519, the Leipzig Disputation took place at the Pleißenburg, which contributed to the spread of Lutheran ideas. In Torgau, Eilenburg and Leipzig, the citizens opened up very early to reformative views. In Leisnig, Luther developed the Leisniger Kastenordnung in 1523, the oldest evangelical social document in the world. Other stations along the Lutherweg Saxony are closely linked to the strong women of the Reformation. At the Nimbschen monastery near Grimma lived Katharina von Bora, Luther’s later wife. In the towns of Rochlitz and Kriebstein, Duchess Elisabeth of Saxony acted energetically and enabled the introduction of the Reformation in her territory as early as 1537. The Lutherweg invites you to pause and find peace, space for contemplation, and time for prayer on the footsteps of Martin Luther and his companions.

Directions

The Lutherweg Saxony is connected to the network of trails in Saxony-Anhalt and the Lutherweg in Thuringia. It extends over about 550 km through the beautiful, diverse landscape of the Leipzig region, passing churches, castles, forts, and monasteries, extensive heathlands, forests, and rivers, right in the heartland of the Reformation. It is marked with a green “L” on a white background, the logo of the Lutherweg, which is indicated in both directions. Therefore, it is possible to start a route at any place through the varied landscape of the Leipzig region to the sites of the Reformation.
