The regions around Leipzig, Chemnitz, and Zwickau are particularly impressive, with their exceptionally high density of majestic castles and magnificent palaces that have preserved history for centuries and today offer fascinating insights into architecture, culture, and regional traditions.

Nestled in picturesque natural and river landscapes, the splendid Hartenfels Castle in Torgau, a central site of Reformation history, and the imposing Rochlitz Castle, once the residence of Duchess Elisabeth, are among the most significant destinations.

The Glauchau Castle, consisting of the Forderglauchau and Hinterglauchau Castles, is one of Saxony’s most important Renaissance complexes and today houses a museum with art and cultural history collections. Medieval romance is exuded by the fortified Gnandstein Castle, which until 1945 was considered the centre of the largest knight’s estates in Saxony, or Kriebstein Castle, perched on steep rocks above the Zschopau River.
