For all nature lovers, the routes along lakes and rivers invite you to linger and relax. The regions around Leipzig, Chemnitz, and Zwickau are particularly impressive, with their exceptionally high density of majestic castles and magnificent palaces that have preserved history for centuries and today offer fascinating insights into architecture, culture, and regional traditions. 

Nestled in picturesque natural and river landscapes, the splendid Hartenfels Castle in Torgau, a central site of Reformation history, and the imposing Rochlitz Castle, once the residence of Duchess Elisabeth, are among the most significant destinations.

The Glauchau Castle, consisting of the Forderglauchau and Hinterglauchau Castles, is one of Saxony’s most important Renaissance complexes and today houses a museum with art and cultural history collections. Medieval romance is exuded by the fortified Gnandstein Castle, which until 1945 was considered the centre of the largest knight’s estates in Saxony, or Kriebstein Castle, perched on steep rocks above the Zschopau River.

The The Luther Trail in Saxony leads through numerous forest landscapes that not only serve as green oases but also offer valuable retreats and recreational spaces for plants and animals.

The Nature Park Düben Heath is considered the largest continuous forest area in the region and impresses with extensive mixed forests, moors and heathlands. No less impressive are the Dahlener Heide, the Thümmlitz Forest and the forest areas around the Mulde and Zschopau valleys. Between small rivers, lakes and wide clearings stretch vast forests with a diverse flora and fauna, inviting you to make many discoveries. The wooded Rochlitzer Berg also offers opportunities for slowing down and experiencing quiet moments of reflection.

The Luther Trail in Saxony not only leads through historic towns and varied landscapes, but also along picturesque rivers and peaceful lakes. Nestled in lush nature, the route follows rivers such as the Mulde, the Zschopau with the Kriebstein Dam, as well as the Pleiße in the Altenburger Land.

Along the individual stages, you can explore wide meadows, calm stretches of water and varied riverside paths that not only offer relaxation, but also highlight the diverse landscapes of Saxony. In the Leipzig region, the Leipzig New Lakeland, once a former open-cast mining area and today a recreational landscape, invites you to take breaks by the water. In this way, the hiking trails along rivers and lakes combine natural experiences with Reformation history in an impressive way.
