Hartenfels Castle Torgau

Palace
Culture and event venue
Museum/art collection
Hartenfels Castle was the residence of the Ernestine electors and a political center of the Reformation; it is considered the only preserved castle of the early German Renaissance.
Anyone entering the castle courtyard for the first time is promised a magnificent spatial impression. In the 16th century, Hartenfels Castle was considered one of the most modern residential palaces in Saxony. The names Martin Luther, Frederick the Wise and John Frederick the Magnanimous are closely associated with its history.

Wing D of the castle houses the exhibition "Torgau. Residence of the Renaissance and Reformation" is presented in Wing D of the castle. In Wing B, Elector John Frederick the Magnanimous and his wife Sibylle lead digitally animated tours in the exhibition "STANDFEST. BIBLEFEST.TRINKFEST." exhibition through the history of the palace. You can also visit the Great Wendelstein, the castle church, the lapidarium and the "Courage and Powerlessness" exhibition at the Torgau memorial site. Two brown bears live in the castle's bear pit, and it's not just young visitors to the castle who are delighted to see them.

Information on accessibility

The castle courtyard, the castle chapel and the exhibitions in Wings B and D are wheelchair-accessible. The Lapidarium is only accessible for wheelchair users with an accompanying person.
