Discover the Nimbschen monastery ruins near Grimma: experience history and enjoy nature.

The Nimbschen monastery ruins near Grimma are a place with an eventful history. Katharina von Bora, the future wife of Martin Luther, once lived here and often stopped off in Grimma. His reformatory ideas also penetrated the former Cistercian nunnery "Marienthron" in Nimbschen, where around 40 nuns had been housed since the end of the 13th century. Nine nuns, including Katharina von Bora, managed to escape from the convent in 1523. After the death of the last abbess, the convent was dissolved in 1536, leaving the buildings to decay.

Today, the picturesque monastery ruins are a popular excursion destination. Not far from the monastery ruins, on the southern rock face, traces of super-volcanism from 294 million years ago can still be seen in the rock. The "Rochlitz quartz porphyry" is heavily weathered there and has already been partially transformed into kaolin.

Information boards on site explain the history of the monastery and its significance for the region.

The former stables and storage facilities of the old monastery estate are now home to a modern hotel complex. The buildings were renovated at great expense and with great attention to detail.

Hiking and cycling trails in the surrounding area invite you to actively explore the area. The idyllic landscape along the Mulde offers a variety of routes for every taste. The Nimbschen-Höfgen cable ferry can also be used to cross the Mulde here. A visit to the monastery ruins can also be easily combined with a trip to the nearby town of Grimma, which attracts visitors with its historic old town.
