A scenically and historically exceptionally charming route leads the hiker from Hirschfeld, the probable birthplace of Katharina von Bora, past the monastery ruins of the Cistercian monastery Altzella, through meadow floodplains and small forest sections, and along the riverbank of the Freiberger Mulde to Döbeln. The monastery, founded in 1162 by Margrave Otto the Rich in the valley of the river, was also the hereditary burial site of the Wettin princely house for almost 200 years. It is very likely that , the wife of Luther, was born and baptized in Hirschfeld.

Almost the entire route runs along the bank of the Freiberger Mulde and offers the hiker beautiful landscape views and quiet places for reflection. On the Freiberger Mulde lies also the romantic park of the former Altzella monastery, whose estates included the town of Roßwein. The Reformation reached the area around 1540. Also worth seeing is the church in Hirschfeld with a Luther gallery and building parts from the 13th century.

Directions

This hike starts at the church in Hirschfeld, first mentioned in 1214. Beyond Mühlweg you leave the place, which is a district of Reinsberg and belongs to the Altzella monastery district, and very soon you reach the Freiberger Mulde, which is crossed somewhat later. After passing under the motorway A4, the path continues via Eichholzgasse to Nossen. From there you follow the Muldental hiking trail past the Altzella monastery ruins to the river crossing at Burgmühle. Here the Lutherweg Sachsen splits from the Muldental hiking trail to make a detour to the church in Gleisberg. Both trails meet again in Wolfstal and continue together through wooded areas and the village Gersdorf to the outskirts of Roßwein. After crossing the railway tracks and the river, you are led directly into the town center. There you go back to the Mulde via the market. After switching from the left to the right bank, you continue parallel to the flowing water and after crossing the river Striegis to the village Niederstriegis. After crossing the Freiberger Mulde from Mahlitzsch the route runs directly on the Muldental trail heading north. It ends in Döbeln in Klosterstraße.
