The Leipzig New Lake District, a landscape formed from former open-cast mining with lakes, forests, and river floodplains, is well known far beyond the borders of Saxony and a popular holiday destination. The floodplain forests surrounding the city of Leipzig, with their rare plant and animal species, are also a rarity. On this route, you combine all this with the flair of the big city and the places of the Reformation, such as the St. Thomas Church, Pleißenburg, and Auerbach's Cellar.

The Luther Trail between Neukieritzsch and Leipzig leads directly through the southern Leipzig New Lake District. On paved paths, between huge, wonderfully beautiful lakes formed from former open-cast mines, through forests and river floodplains, the hiker reaches Leipzig. This unique lake landscape attracts countless tourists from home and abroad every year. The floodplain landscape and floodplain forests in and around Leipzig are also known for their impressive plant and animal life. From Lake Cospuden, through Kees'schen Park in Markkleeberg, past Leipzig wildlife park, along the Elster flood channel, to the city center, this is an unusually impressive natural route. In the Pleißenburg in Leipzig in 1519, the disputation between Luther and his opponent Eck took place, which led to Luther's break with Rome and ultimately to the imposition of the imperial ban over him. It was only after the death of Duke "Georg the Bearded" that the introduction of the Reformation in Albertine Saxony and thus also in Leipzig was possible.

Directions

The route starts at Borna Street and then turns right into the old Post Street. Afterwards, it goes along School Street and crosses the Pleiße over Kahnsdorfer Street. The Luther Trail now follows the Pleiße bike path for a bit. Then it goes east towards Kahnsdorf and from there north between Kahnsdorf Lake and Hainer Lake. The Rötha reservoir is left to the left and continues north on Kreudnitzer Street into Rötha. Here the path leads over Dürer Street and Marien Street to the town hall. Past the church, it goes over Johann Sebastian Bach Square into the Volkspark, which is crossed heading north. Here you turn left into Böhlen Street up to Bischofsweg, which you follow to the end. Then do not turn onto Straße des Aufbaus but continue straight along the Pleiße. The path crosses it and leads into Wald Street. From there, it goes north always parallel to the Pleiße, from Böhlen also parallel to the railway tracks through Probstdeuben and Debitzdeuben. In Debitzdeuben, you go along Straße des Friedens to Feld Street, where you turn left. Then you follow the marked route, cross the A38 to the north via a bridge, and continue north, running through a forest area, to the city of Markkleeberg. Here you come out at Zöbigker Harbor and walk along the shore of Lake Cospuden, through Kees'schen Park and Equipagenweg into the last forest section before Leipzig. On Equipagenweg, which runs straight north, you continue walking until you see the river Pleiße on your left, along whose bank you continue towards the city. First allotment gardens are already visible on the way. At Schleußiger Weg, the Pleiße flows into the Elster flood channel. From there, it continues along the river northwards. At Rennbahnweg, you leave the river and turn left through Clara Zetkin Park to the roundabout at Karl-Tauchnitz Street. You follow Karl-Tauchnitz Street to the New Town Hall and then go over Burgplatz to St. Thomas Church.
