The Luther Trail in Saxony invites you to discover history, nature, and culture on 29 varied stages. Our themed tours not only guide you in the footsteps of Martin Luther and the Reformation, but also offer fascinating insights into the historic town centres, castles, and palaces. 

For all nature lovers, the routes along lakes and rivers invite you to linger and relax. Dense forests, floodplain landscapes, and idyllic orchard meadows shape the stages, while additional sights provide cultural highlights. The regions around Leipzig, Chemnitz, and Zwickau are particularly impressive, with their exceptionally high density of imposing castles and magnificent palaces that have preserved history for centuries and today offer fascinating insights into architecture, culture, and regional traditions.

Nestled within picturesque natural and river landscapes, the splendid Hartenfels Castle in Torgau, a key site of Reformation history, and the impressive Rochlitz Castle, once the residence of Duchess Elisabeth, are among the most important destinations.

The Glauchau Castle, consisting of the Forderglauchau and Hinterglauchau castles, is one of Saxony's most significant Renaissance complexes and today houses a museum featuring art and cultural history collections. The fortified Gnandstein Castle, which until 1945 served as the center of Saxony’s largest knightly estates, radiates medieval charm, as does Kriebstein Castle, perched on steep cliffs above the Zschopau River.

The Luther Trail in Saxony leads through numerous forest landscapes that not only serve as green oases but also offer valuable retreats and recreational spaces for plants and animals.

The Nature Park Düben Heath is considered the largest continuous forest area in the region and impresses with extensive mixed forests, moors, and heathland. Equally impressive are the Dahlener Heath, the Thümmlitz Forest, and the forest areas around the Mulde and Zschopau valleys. Between small rivers, lakes, and wide clearings, expansive forests with a diverse flora and fauna stretch out, inviting you to make numerous discoveries. The wooded Rochlitzer Berg also offers opportunities for slowing down and moments of quiet reflection.

Rivers & lakes

The Luther Trail in Saxony not only leads through historic places and varied landscapes, but also along picturesque rivers and tranquil lakes. Embedded in lush nature, the route follows rivers such as the Mulde river, the Zschopau with the Kriebstein Dam, as well as the Pleiße in the Altenburger Land.

On the individual stages, you can explore wide floodplains, calm water surfaces and varied riverbank paths that not only offer relaxation but also highlight the scenic diversity of Saxony. In the Region Leipzig, the Leipzig New Lakeland, once a former open-cast mining area and now a recreational landscape, invites you to take breaks by the water. In this way, the hiking trails along rivers and lakes combine natural experiences with Reformation history in an impressive way.
