The route starts in one of the most beautiful Renaissance towns in Germany, which is one of the birthplaces of the Reformation. In the 16th century, it was the political center of the Reformation. After a visit to Hartenfels Castle and St. Mary's town church, where the bones of Katharina Luther lie (she died in Torgau in 1552), the hiker sets off through the Elbauen, where another fantastic panoramic view of the town of Torgau awaits him. The path leads along small lakes and over dreamily beautiful hiking and forest trails, along little trafficked village roads. After passing the Schildau church, the path leads to the neighboring Sitzenroda, a passage favored by Luther because it was remote from the main route. In the ducal territory, Luther, against whom the imperial ban was imposed, was in great danger and therefore used paths remote from the town center. In Schildau, the hiker can expect the Gneisenau memorial, the Schildbürgermuseum, and the Schildbürger fountain as well as a lookout tower on the Schildberg.

Directions
In Torgau, start at Hartenfels Castle. From there, follow the marked route always along the Elbe, past the harbor castle, southwards to the village of Loßwig. There, turn right to the village of Pflückuff, which you leave again heading west on the Sachsenweg. At the fork, continue on the Schwertweg through the Torgau Ratsforst. On hiking and forest trails along small lakes, you reach the village of Staupitz and then Schildau. The last leg between Kurzwalde and Schildau runs on a little trafficked village road. However, since cars are allowed to drive 80 km/h there, it is best to walk beside the left edge of the roadway so you can be seen by approaching cars as early as possible.
