After leaving the Frankenhausen monastery, the "Lutherweg Sachsen" approaches the Thuringia state border. Here there is a connection to the "Lutherweg Thüringen". In Ponitz, both routes meet. In Altenburg, they separate again. Altenburg has a special significance for the Reformation. It was not only one of the most important residences of the Saxon electors. It is also associated with the name Georg Spalatin, who was the closest confidant, secretary, and confessor of Elector Frederick the Wise. As Luther's confidant, Spalatin was an important mediator between Luther and the elector for many years.

Directions
- In Crimmitschau, start at the market and then go north into Leipziger Straße. From there, turn into Zeitzer Straße and follow it to Waldstraße. From there, go north out of the city. Behind the artificial ice rink, the path follows the Sahnbach westward, crosses the S54, and then runs along the Pleiße northward. After passing under the A4 motorway, you reach the district of Frankenhausen. In Frankenhausen, go via Leipziger Straße into Mittelmühlstraße. Follow this to Löpitz and then continue on Bahnhofstraße. On this street, cross the Pleiße and then turn left into the street "An der Pleiße." The path now follows the route marked with a green "L" on a white background north to Merlach, where it turns right into Zschöpeler Straße. From there, continue north past Kauritz and Gößnitz. Here, the path runs parallel to the S-Bahn line S5. Behind the Mohrbach, turn right from Walter-Rabold-Straße and walk to Bornshain. From there, go north over Maltis to Saara. Continuing along the Pleiße, pass through Mockern and Ehrenberg to Paditz. At the quarry, leave Paditzer Straße, cross the B93, and enter the city of Altenburg. In Altenburg, the path then continues from the large pond via Teichvorstadt, Berggasse, and Jungferngasse to a roundabout. Here the Lutherweg turns into the castle park.
